Save Yourself from VOCs with Non-Toxic Paints
If you’ve bought paint for your home recently, you would have likely noticed more focus on non-toxic paints. You may have also noticed the words “Zero VOC” and “Low VOC” on these paints, but what does that mean? Is it important? The truth is that these are extremely important and are serious factors to keep in mind.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) – What are they?
VOC, or volatile organic compounds, very simply put are organic compounds that are capable of evaporating under normal indoor atmospheric temperatures and pressures. When these compounds reach certain temperatures and begin to evaporate they may give off a range of harmful chemicals. Having these compounds in your paint adds to already high levels of world pollution. That is why at Paintcor we have placed much time and energy into making quality non-toxic low VOC paints, for you.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates VOCs outdoors as these compounds and have been proven to cause what has been termed photochemical smog. What this means is that these compounds react with sunlight and are then converted into other possible toxic chemicals, as well as forming vision-obscuring smog in higher concentrations. If this were to occur on or near roads it could lead to severe accidents in the short term, not to mention the dangers of long term exposure. So by using low VOC paint you are doing everybody a favour.
Is zero VOC paint safe?
The truth is that low VOC non-toxic paints are often not as safe as they claim to be. Many paint manufacturers like to focus on the reduced VOCs in their paints, while in actual fact some of their paints are still full of other harmful chemicals and heavy metals. For us, this is unacceptable.
